If you click on the Activities Calendar link in the navigation bar to the right, you will find a calendar full of things for you to do across campus. You should also find this calendar and its events in your UA Google Calendar (calendar.zips.uakron.edu). These activities include everything from STEM to Residence Life to cultural events. There is something for everyone!
And if you do not see something on the calendar you know is taking place on campus, well add it! All COF Scholars have been given access through their UA Calendar, which you can find at calendar.zips.uakron.edu. We try hard to identify as many activities across campus as possible and consolidate all of them in one place for your easy access, but we need your help. Please add those events you think others might find interesting across campus.
What is the purpose of the challenge?
This is a very valid questions and I am sure many of you are thinking this is just another hoop to jump through. As you know or maybe not, I try to be up front with you regarding program requirements and often seek out your advice as how best to proceed. Our goal is never to give you anything just for the sake of it. The Choose Ohio First Program was initiated by the State of Ohio to provide students seeking degrees in STEMM fields assistance achieving their academic and career goals all with the hope these students will remain in Ohio building a greater workforce in these increasing fields. Our hope with the Campus Activity Challenge is that you become more connected to the University, the surrounding community, your chosen field of study and the State of Ohio. It is the connections we build that can influence how we achieve our goals.
What are the requirements this semester?
Each COF Scholar must attend 3 unique events during spring semester.
1. One event must be related to your academic and career goals. Remember, the earlier you become part of the biology, chemistry, nursing, engineering, education community you increase your opportunities and degree of success. Many of the departments on campus hold lecture series, brown bag presentations, research presentations or other events/activities. Though you may find yourself not know everything they are talking about, it is a great idea to attend these events. You get to meet faculty and fellow students in your major leading to building your network and increasing your opportunities to become involved or find a position in the future.
2. One event must be culturally or socially related.
3. Only one event can be a sporting event or sports game.
What should I include in my reflection?
Write a brief summary. This all can be bulleted or responded to in short answers. Here are some suggestions for what to write about. All summaries must include #1.
1. Summary of the activity: Title, Presenter(s), Who organized the event?, Purpose, Target Audience, Topic(s)
2. What interested you in this activity?
3. What did you learn or take away from this activity?
4. Would you recommend to another COF Scholar? Why or why not?
What can I win?
Prizes to be determined
Where should I submit the reflection?
You can submit your reflection in one of two ways.
Email directly to either Tim Sisson, Julie Hall, or Epiphany Pietzcker.
You can copy and paste your reflection into the Discussion Tab at the top this page as a post. By doing this your reflection becomes public! So why would you want to post it to the wiki? This will give other COF Scholars an opportunity to read about various opportunities on campus, find new things that interest them, add additional information about the topic, start a discussion, or just leave a comment about the reflection overall. Note: When posting to the Discussion tab you will lose formatting. Do not worry about the formatting! You can simply copy and paste into the Message box.
Why should I comment on a post?
Why not contribute?
